Tulum, the walled city

Tulum's greatest attraction is its location. It stands on a bluff facing the rising sun looking out on views of the Caribbean that are nothing less than spectacular. In Maya, Tulum means "Wall", and the city was christened thus because it is a walled city; one of the very few the ancients ever built. Research suggests it was formerly called Zama or "to dawn" in its day, which is appropriate given the location. It seems "Tulum" is the name given the site following a visit by the explorers Stephens and Catherwood in 1841, just before the beginning of the Caste War in 1847, long after the city was abandon and fell to ruins. They ordered trees cleared and Catherwood made illustrations of temples, later to be published in their famous book "Incidents of Travel in Yucatan". Juan José Gálvez is actually credited with Tulum's rediscovery in 1840.

Cozumel, the largest island in the Mexican caribean

Cozumel is the largest island in the Mexican Caribbean. It is also the most populated island in Mexico with an estimated population of around 90,000.
Cozumel is situated near the eastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula in the State of Quintana Roo. The island is approximately 30 miles [48 km] long and 10 miles [16 km] wide. It is about 12 mi [20 km] from the mainland, and some 36 mi [60 km] south of Cancun.
Isla Cozumel [or Cozumel Island] derives its name from the Mayans who once lived there and regarded the island as a sacred place. In Mayan, Cuzamil [Cozumel] translates to "land of the swallows," a reflection of the indigenous birds that inhabit the island.

Cancun

History

The far East of the Yucatán peninsula, to the South of the Mexican Republic is surrounded by the Caribbean sea and is known as the Mayan Coast, given this pre-Hispanic civilisation's influence all across the area, from Punta Brava to Punta Allen. The north side of the coast boasts an amazing tourist infrastructure and impressive development.

In 1967 the Mexican Government recognised the importance of the tourist industry as an active ingredient of the country's economy, and Cancun was one of the places to become a firm candidate for foreign investment and the development of a hotel and entertainment infrastructure, given that its natural beauty was an obvious temptation for any traveller. The first hotels that were built in the 70s were the Palacio Maya and Club Med, both of which developed a great reputation.

Cancun is still an important tourist destination today, and up until the 90s many new hotels were built, as well as American-style shopping malls and all the entertainment facilities it now has to offer.

Xocen The Center of The World.

History

The history of the Holy Cross Tun, Center of the World, describes that in ancient times, there were three deities. One Tun the Holy Cross, the greatest deity, another intermediate between the three, whose name is not remembered and the cross lower, the more miraculous, called Juan de la Cruz Tun Verde.

The cult of the Holy Cross of Xocen

The cult of the Holy Cross Xocen Tun is a current example of the cosmic vision of the Maya of the Yucatan Peninsula.
The eastern region of the Yucatan Peninsula is a stronghold of traditions, customs and rituals that reflect the mix of Mayan and Catholic religions.
In Xocen (Municipality of Valladolid, Yucatan, Mexico) there is a clear example of this mixture of religions.
The result is a religious-historical phenomenon that defines the micro-history of this town through the tradition of the Holy Cross Tun, Center of the World.

The Concept of Deity
The evidence described in the narrative, that support the Holy Cross Tun as a deity, are as follows: the presence of a container with water clean and eternal and the influx of animals to the sanctuary, the cross-shaped body, the peripheral area Immaculate the sanctuary.
The holy crossTun was the deity who God made when he went to heaven to be God of this world. According to this view, the deity is superior to others.

Xocen theater

In Xocen there is a theater where we can see traditional dances of Yucatan, representations of religious cults and some pre-Hispanic traditions that still are preserved in that town.
